Jogging: Shoe Shopping
Buying shoes for the purpose of jogging is more difficult than you might think. Unlike buying shoes for the workplace or going out, there are a number of factors which need to be considered. If these are not considered properly the resulting bad experience(s) could be enough to put you off an activity that can be a joy with the right pair of shoes.
The internet has made buying shoes simple; log on, browse for what seems suitable, and buy. The main problem with of doing this where jogging shoes is concerned is that you really must try them on before you buy.
Function over Fashion
The temptation, as with anything, is to buy the shoes which look the best; but often the shoes that look the best aesthetically will not be the ones that suit your foot and running style. While the right shoe can depend on your foot shape, it can also depend largely on other factors which may be overlooked; things such as length of stride, physique and generally physiology play just as important a part.
Never buy jogging / running shoes over the internet unless you a) have already purchased running shoes before and are familiar with what suits you best or b) are confident you have had a good enough communication with the retailer—him or her explaining to you everything you need to know and asking questions concerning your height, weight and other important things—to be confident you are making the right choice.
The best way to buy jogging shoes is the old fashioned way: try them on in the flesh. That way, a member of staff can advise on what is best for you, and what is unsuitable.
After you have purchased the shoes, if you don’t feel confident they are the right ones for you, feel free to go back to the store and ask to swap them for something more fitting; while it may cost you something to do so—the shoes being slightly worn—it’s better to accept this than spend the next three weeks getting blisters and wishing you hadn’t bothered.
