Running and boredom
As much as I enjoy running, one thing that I am constantly fighting is the setting in of boredom after a period of regular running. It’s not that I get bored of running but it’s just that the thought of running sort of gets me down. It starts like this; I go to a sports store and get a good pair of mens running shoes if needed, comfortable shorts and tee and there I am– ready to roll from the next morning onwards.

I set out and for the next week or two, I explore all the possible routes, stretch myself and well, enjoy my running. Sometime around the second week, I feel the urge to skip it for a day or two. You know, catch an extra wink and well, I ask myself, it won’t change anything, will it? After doing this routine a couple of times, I realised that it does; I seldom get back!

One time, I found a running partner. As long as we were running together, there was sufficient motivation for me to keep going and ignore my ‘two week itch’. In fact, such a thing never even came up. Both of us motivated the other to keep going just that little bit more every time we wanted to take a break. And if, by chance, either of us wanted to skip a day, some pep talk from the other made sure we never stopped. Just that on such occasions, we cut down the duration. That’s when I realised that running with a partner was a great source of motivation to keep going – particularly when I didn’t want to. Now every time I run, I make sure I have a running partner. It is the easiest way to stay motivated about running. Now I think that the level of fitness I wanted to achieve this year is quite possible.
